Series: U-Fit
1 Tim 4:7b-8 Paul says, “train yourself to be Godly...For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”
Physical fitness is a good thing and it has benefits: stronger muscles and bones, a healthier cardio-vascular system, greater mobility, and the prevention or decrease of certain health problems. Physical fitness certainly has its benefits, but it is of limited value, as Paul says.
In contrast, godliness is a great pursuit, because it has benefit in all areas of our life both here on earth, as well as for eternity. In v7, the word “train” or“exercise” comes from the Gk verb “gymnazo,” the root of our English “gymnasium, ” and a related word “gymnasia” is used in v. 8, which speaks of physical activity, working out or exercising. The church is the gym for our soul. This message will explore why we need the church.
