In this miracle story, Jesus’ encounters a man, who was a part of a synagogue, a community of worship, and participated in their fellowship. Yet, he was oppressed by an unclean spirit. Outwardly, he was in the synagogue, but inwardly he was in the control of an unclean or demonic spirit. The word unclean suggests immorality or lewdness. It appears that the manifestation of this demonic spirit in this mans life was in the form a lifestyle of sexual immorality.

Just as in Jesus day, there are people who are oppressed of the devil in church every Sunday. The powers of darkness are real and active in the world today even as they were in Jesus’ time, and we need to know that there is still hope and help in Jesus.

Peter and John, along with their partners had fished all night, and caught nothing. Fishing was not a hobby for them, but their livelihood. They depended on fishing to support themselves and their families. They did all they could, for as long as they could, and still ended up empty handed, until Jesus showed up, and they caught so many fish that their and their partners boats began to sink.

There will come a time in all of our lives, when we have done all that we can, for as long as we can, and still see no change, no progress. We will have nothing left of our own, no strength to keep on, and I pray this message will prepare you heart for that day and that hour.

Martha loved Jesus, she believed He was the Son of God, and she believed He could heal her brother, but she couldn’t reconcile His delay, His seeming indifference, with his love for her. She couldn’t reconcile her circumstances with His promises, and so she was angry and disappointed with Jesus.

As we look at Martha today, we may to see ourselves in her in many of the situations we face in life. I think we will be able to draw comfort and strength from the Lord’s response to her, and I pray that our faith will be encouraged by the final outcome of her situation
